Statement about Evacuation of Barry and Jones Hall on Jan. 8, 2012
On Sunday evening a gas leak was discovered in a hot water system servicing Barry and Jones Halls at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. Midshipmen and staff on duty immediately evacuated Barry and Jones Halls, which share mechanical systems, and two adjacent barracks. Emergency responders transported thirty-nine midshipmen to local hospitals for evaluation, however no one was admitted. The barracks buildings were ventilated, and a hazardous materials team from the Nassau County Police Department tested the air in the barracks to ensure it was free of carbon monoxide, and that the buildings were safe to reoccupy. Midshipmen were permitted to return to their rooms by approximately 10:30 p.m. Sunday evening. All midshipmen were able to attend regularly scheduled classes on Monday morning.

Dear Parents and Friends,
If you have not already paid your dues, we would encourage
you to send the payment as soon as possible. Your
$40 dues fund many activities that
benefit your children directly. So you know, your dues help
fund:
1. Boodle boxes for all students
currently on campus whose parents are Metro NY Club Members
-
Boodle Boxes/Bags are boxes of goodies (pencils, candy bars,
etc.) for the mids to receive right before exams. It's a
morale booster for them as they face finals. Again, this is
only for those students whose parents are members of the NY
Metro Parents Club.
2. Themed Parents Club Dinner -
Every year the Parents Club holds a theme dinner
(last year it was wine tasting) where food and drinks are
provided at no addition cost to dues-paying member parents.
3. Invitation to the All-Academy
Ball - A formal affair with dinner and dancing
where families in the NY area whose children attend any one
of the 5 service academies are invited to attend. There is
no charge for our Midshipmen/Plebes to attend; our Parents
Club pays for the Mids tickets. Seniors are honored at this
event from each of the 5 service academies. It is a
memorable night for both Mids/Plebes and their families.
4. Christmas Party -
While the NY Parents Club throws a Christmas party for the
entire regiment, parents who are members of the NY Club are
also invited to join in with the regiment. It is a fun night
and a time to see the entire regiment enjoying themselves.
Every mid receives a gift and dinner is provided to all.
5. Senior Awards -
Seniors graduating from KP are honored for all their hard
work along with their parents in a touching evening held
before graduation. Any senior parent not yet a NY Parent
Club member should not miss the opportunity to relish this
time with their graduating midshipman. The midshipmen
address their parents and the mids all receive a beautiful
gift. We encourage all first class parents of the Class of
2011 to join with us in an unforgettable evening. It is also
a time for you to be recognized for the incredible help you
have provided your children during the journey.
6. Monthly Meetings -
The monthly meeting which are very informative, are open to
all member of the NY Parents Club. Not only do you get to
meet and form friendships with other parents, but the
meetings often have guest speakers who give parents a better
understanding of Kings Point and the maritime industry.
In addition to the events we hold for just our members, we
also do many things throughout the year for the entire
regiment as the Host Club.
Even if you have never joined the NY Parents Club, please
consider doing so now - we are making a special plea to the
parents of the class of 2011. Your Midshipmen have worked
really hard to get to where they are now and deserve to be
honored. If you cannot make any of the meetings it is OK,
but just by joining, your senior will be honored in a way
they deserve.
Respectfully,
The Metro NY Parents Board
